Cecilia was born in 1956 in Ermelo and has been a resident in Bloemfontein since 1988 where she lives with her husband Vernon van Vuuren and their three children.
Cecilia was informally tutored in visual art practice by Joy Rousseau, artist and former lecturer in Visual Arts at the University of Potchefstroom; during 1990 by Johan Fourie, lecturer at Motheo Technical College; in 1997 and 1998 by the late Werner Wiid, former head: Arts Department, Bloemfontein College of Education, where different media of artmaking were explored, and in 1999 at Marian DeNard’s art school. She obtained a BA (Unisa) in 1981, and BA (Hons) Psychology (UFS) in 2004, as well as the Advanced University Diploma in Visual Arts (Unisa) in 2011.
She has practised traditional art making since 1986 until 2010, when she enrolled at Unisa for the Advanced University Diploma in Visual Arts to develop her skills with regard to conceptual artmaking. She resigned in October after 35 years of employment (for the last 17 years as state accountant) to devote her full attention to her art studies. She is currently enrolled at the University of the Free State for a Master’s degree in Visual Arts which she will obtain at the end of 2018.
She was selected as a finalist in the 2017 as well as 2018 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition presented annually in collaboration with the Association of Arts Pretoria. She was also selected for two consecutive years (2016 and 2017) as finalist for the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition.
Phatshoane Henney Attorneys commissioned her in 2016 to create two 20cm x 20cm artworks, and additionally included the oil painting Waiting for the next move, in their permanent art collection in 2017.
