"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken for dust thou art, and unto dush shalt thou return." (Genesis 3:19).
This phrase, "ashes to ashes dust to dust", comes form the funeral service in the Book of Common Prayer, and it is based on Genesis 3:19, Genesis 18:27, Job 30:19 and Ecclesiastes 3:20.
The reference of this artwork is photos that the artist took in the field just outside their property after a fire destroyed the surrounding field as well as some of the surrounding property. In the current South Africa there is a lot of violent act being committed against farmers and their land. These scenes of destruction, whether created byman or nature, reminds us of how fragile life is. And how we all return to where we come form - dust to ashes.
