Julian Mentz is an artist, interior designer and architect. He qualified with a Masters degree in Architecture at the University of the Free State in 2017 and has since opened his own design practice, Big Massive, which is dedicated to crafting unique spatial experiences using a variety of mediums.
His architectural background has inspired a central focus on the built environment which is expressed through an exploration of the boundaries between art and place-making. His artistic endeavours seek to create catalysts from improving living conditions in our cities.
In coming to terms with how human settlements are subject to continuous life-cycles, the artist aims to unearth and re-purpose spaces in Bloemfontein’s CBD that have otherwise been abandoned. These spaces, of forgotten value and aesthetic appeal, are rarely exposed to the public at large. Julian aims to change that and introduce a new way for us to see and experience our city.
