Leon was born in Windhoek, Namibia, but completed his primary school education in Germany and his secondary school education in South Africa, matriculating from Grey College in Bloemfontein in 1987. After completing his school education, he returned to Germany to complete a plumbing artisanship. He worked in Germany as a plumber and then returned to South Africa in 1998 to establish a plumbing business in Cape Town. After almost 15 years of managing his business, he moved to Bloemfontein in 2011.
During this time he joined Anita Oliphant's private art classes as his first exposure to formal drawing and painting. Leon registered for a BA in Fine Arts degree at the University of the Free State at the beginning of 2016 and is in his final year of studies within this undergraduate programme. His experience in the building industry, specifically his knowledge of metal, wood, stone and concrete has greatly contributed to his ability to combine different sculpting materials.
In 2017 he received a Sasol New Signatures Finalist Award for his sculpture 'Fleeting Quietness' and was a selected entrant for the 2017 Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition with his drawing 'Imprinted Identity.' Leon works with concepts like identity and social media.
