Marius Jansen van Vuuren is an artist working in various materials that include steel, concrete, spray-paints and resin. He also experiments with interdisciplinary practices and art-making in the public realm.

He collaborates with other artists as well and has worked on such projects in China, Kazakhstan and the UK.

Born in Virginia in 1981 he became acquainted with art during his upbringing in Worcester and graduated with a B-tech in Fine Art from the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein in 2009. In 2017 Jansen van Vuuren gave up his career as Art Teacher of 10 years to pursue a full-time career as a professional artist.

In 2016 he built his first giant sculpture as part of the flagship project of the Free State Art Festival, which led to collaborations with other public artists over the last 3 years on the creation of other giant works, including the world’s largest straw squirrel in Kazakhstan.

Jansen van Vuuren is influenced by street art, sculptures in public spaces and how people engage with them. He is also inspired by individual and social interaction between humans, environment and animals.

He regards the making of artworks as a process that aims to engage the viewer and share with them an object or process, and invite them through curiosity.
